By following the doctor's directions, you can minimize discomfort.

Prescriptions for narcotic medications may only be given during regular office hours. Please consult with Dr. Cass if you anticipate needing additional medication.

DONOT BE ALONE

Patients who have undergone I.V. Sedation should be carefully attended by a responsible adult for at least four to six hours after leaving the office. The patient is not permitted to drive the day of surgery. Bed rest 3 to 24 hours following surgery is strongly suggested.

PAIN

A certain amount of discomfort is to be expected. This varies with the amount of surgery required. It is usually controlled effectively by the drugs that have been prescribed. Eat or drink milk products before taking these medications, unless otherwise directed.

BLEEDING

Bite on the gauze packing approximately two hours after leaving the office and then remove completely. A continuous oozing of blood is normal during the first 24 hours following surgery. If fresh bleeding recurs, then place a fresh gauze sponge over the area of bleeding and bite firmly for one hour and then remove the sponge. Avoid excessive spitting as this will dislodge the blood clot.

SWELLING and DISCOLORATION

Swelling and discoloration are a part of the healing process and unless extreme are of no practical importance. Place an ice bag to your face for 24 hours (2 hours on, 30 minutes off). The earlier this is started the more effective it will be. It is helpful to keep the head elevated on two pillows the day and first night after surgery. Swelling is usually the greatest 48 hours after surgery. Do not apply external heat unless directed to do so.

TEMPERATURE

Elevated temperature may occur after surgery. If temperature is above 100 degrees (oral), take 2 Tylenol. Call our office if the temperature continues past 24 hours.

DIET

For your comfort, cool liquids and soft foods should be taken the first 36 hours. During this period, avoid using a straw. After this a regular diet may be eaten. AVOID carbonated and alcoholic beverages for 24 hours.

DO NOT BEND OVER

Do not put your head below heart. If need be, squat down. Bending over could disturb the blood clot.

DO NOT RINSE MOUTH

Do not rinse your mouth until 24 hours after surgery as this could dislodge the blood clot and retard healing. At that time rinse the mouth gently using a glass of warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon to a glass). Repeat 6 to 8 times during the day and continue for 6 days. Do not use mouth wash. Brush teeth as usual except for the operated area.

NO SMOKING

Do not smoke for 72 hours. It is detrimental to healing.

COMPLICATIONS

Call this office concerning any complications. Our phone number is (512) 345-2655.

RECOVERY TIME

RULE OF THUMB: you should notice improvement in your condition each day. If you are not feeling better after 2-3 days, call our office.

DRY SOCKET

Dry Socket (lost blood clot) pain doesn't not go away with medication. A special medicated dressing must be placed into the extraction site and relief can be yours. This dressing is usually replaced daily for a few days.
