Brush Baby Gums and Teeth
|
|
Start early with your baby's gum care. Use a washcloth to gently rub baby's gums to accustom the baby to the idea. Babies get plaque too, but it begins developing especially when real foods are introduced. We give expecting moms these finger-cover brushes. Then of course there are musical toothbrushes, and smaller toothbrushes that your baby can play with and chew on as he watches mom and dad brush their own teeth. Kids love to do what parents are doing, so encourage your child to watch you brush your teeth and imitate you. Lots of years and praise goes a long way with babies and toddlers (hey, adults too). Toothpaste is really optional (see our article titled "It's Friction that Cleans Teeth"). If you do use toothpaste, I recommend any of the ADA accepted brands. Often kids may repeal from strong minty flavors. My youngest son says they are "saucy." We see kids with beautiful teeth that have never used paste but brush faithfully. Parents should check for any dark spots and floss a youngster's teeth occasionally. |
